I didnt use the disk during the command because it was not requested for. I dont think this command need a disk on vista. I have done system restore through safemode and everythings seems better but not total. I also did chkdsk /r and then i tried the sfc /scannow again which stopped again at 84% with the same error message. After the system restore i can oppen almost all things compmgmt, devmgr, cmd with administrative priviledge but the UAC no longer confirm my execution of programs. i tried to enable it in msconfig but didnt work. The drivers were missing, I installed all but not the only one i dont have its clue Mass storage device. I dont know its consequence but i have used things like flash drive on the pc and it worked fine
Thanks to all

A friend of mine just got a Toshiba satellite A205-???? laptop sent to hime from US from his own brother. I checked the label, it was supposed to come with vista home edition but it has the extreme gamer edition. I was convinced that probably the system was formatted and re-installed because many things were not working. The cam, wireless, fingerprint were not working. I decided to help.

All programs that need administrative authorisation are down with this horrible error message when trying to run them

File System error (65535)

I searched the forum but nothing came up. I searched the internet and i found
sfc /scannow
well, it required an admnistrator though but i got through in safe mode.
At safemode everything was working fine.
sfc /scannow stopped at 84% and told me it could not fix some files. though there was a log.

Ordeal
Though I did system restore and UAC is no longer working i guess, i am now being denied access to some files such as the log file of the said sfc /scannow
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.txt
and i feel things are not good

Maybe it's like those pedestrian crossing lights where the button isn't connected to anything other than an illuminated sign telling you to 'wait'? It makes one feel better to report it?

Interesting article on how the internet's widely used BGP may not be handling your traffic safely. Most ISP's on the list haven't implemented fixes.

#31 Re: Off Topic » Offline storage of security credentials » 2021-03-01 17:59:44

I keep a copy of all "can't lose" documents in cloud storage, and a duplicate copy on an external hard drive. I wouldn't personally trust a USB drive for long-term storage as they are made to be cheap, and that doesn't give me peace of mind.

However, before they go on there, I encrypt them with 7-zip, using a master password in order to see or access the files.

#32 Re: Off Topic » How to format my encrypted HDD? » 2021-02-19 15:14:49

I can only speak out of experience regarding Bitlocker, but you don't even need to use disk part if you're reinstalling the OS. During the drive/partition management step of the OS install you can easily format a bitlocked drive. If it's just a storage drive, hkhan's suggestion will do the trick.

#36 Off Topic » Computer Networking vs. Computer Science » 2021-02-18 15:44:24

Hello everyone. A short while ago I stumbled upon your website while searching for answers to some concerns that I have. Some other new posters here had similar problems to my own, and I saw that the input from people here was excellent. Figured I'd give it a shot.

Let me start out with saying I am a 21 year old student of a community college. I have been attending, drifting really, for 3 years without getting serious in any type of degree. It took a few years but I have finally decided on settling upon either a computer sciences degree or networking.

My concern is that without as indepth an understanding of both professions as I would like, I can't make an educated choice on which degree I should focus on. I am certainly not new to computers, but the knowledge I possess is paltry compared to most first year computer-anything students.

Now with computer networking, I am in love with everything I have seen offered. The ability to integrate vast networks of computers is intriguing. It seems to me that computer networking is not only a good choice for it being something I can enjoy, but will also earn me a good salary.

Computer sciences covers very interesting topics that I wouldn't mind learning about. Theorizing in such things as robotics and artificial intelligence would be an amazing thing to do with my life. As good as having a career with networking may be, I find that POSSIBLY with computer sciences, I can do something more epic in my life. My hesitation is the actual way in which I apply computer sciences to my profession. Is it really all programming and writing code, spending countless hours in front of a computer, getting carpel tunnel syndrome, and inevitably punching a fax machine with my bare hands?

While I find the topics of computer sciences to be truly interesting, I fear the reality of implementing those "theorizes" will result in me hating computer sciences, my job, life etc.

Let me add that I wish to attend a 4 year school -live on campus, party, etc- if I was to start my networking. One of the most daunting tasks is finding a school that would be a correct fit. The college I attend can't really help me out since they only want me to attend colleges they have a compact with, in the Massachusetts area/Rhode Island, and only two schools or so offer networking. I don't wish to attend any schools around my area so anywhere in the US is preferable. So anyone with recommendations to any good networking colleges where I can get a true college experience would be helpful also.

I think what would be most helpful from anyone who reads my post here would perhaps be some insight into what I can come to expect from each of the degrees/professsions listed above. In most situations in life, you can weigh the good and the bad to make an informed decisions, but it seems I can't get a firm handle on what the bad would be of the professions I am interested in. Thanks in advance to anyone who reads and answers this long winded post.

#37 Re: Off Topic » How to find out one’s Viber account is hacked » 2021-02-18 15:43:00

I highly doubt it was hacked based on the icon numbers, I've had several apps do this to me before. Clash of Clans, Facebook Messenger, mail app are all ones I've seen do this. I suggest turning off all notifications and alerts for the app in settings. Restart the phone or wait a few days and it may disappear when you re enable the notifications. Though I can't say for sure that you account wasn't hacked. I am surprised though seeing as how my issues were with earlier versions of iOS. Which are you running?

#38 Re: Off Topic » VPN effectiveness question » 2021-02-15 13:52:44

Many VPNs are sold on fear. What proof is there you are being watched by them now?

Also with the Snowden leaks VPN is now known to not be bullet proof. And then the VPN company now sees what you do so in a phrase "HONEY POT!" You may have jumped out of the frying pan and into the fire.

#40 Re: Off Topic » What's the difference between encoding, encryption, and hashing? » 2021-02-15 11:44:18

Encryption trades with keys which are using encrypt and decrypt the data. These keys are used to change a simple text into a cypher text and the vice versa.

Encryption is used to Security of data

Encoding:

The message is encoded by using an algorithm in encoding. However, one cipher text is produced for each plain text. The strategy used for change is not kept secret like in the case of encryption.

Encoding is used to Protection of integrity of data

Hashing:
Data is converted to a message digest or hash, which is a number generated from a string of text. These digests are important as one can effortless match the hash of sent and received messages to ensure that both are the same and no tempering is done with the data.

Hashing is used to Verification of data

#41 Re: Off Topic » Is file encryption important? » 2021-02-15 11:18:32

Well you should not hide data from your loved ones like your WiFi but you should encrypt data because today major companies and a lot of persons are after your data like credit card number details , bank account , PayPal data etc you should consider encryption as there are many tools to use my favorite is bit locker and veracrypt

#43 Re: Off Topic » What is the difference between threat, vulnerability, and a risk? » 2021-02-15 07:44:56

Threat, Vulnerability and Risk - these factors are related to cybersecurity and cyber attacks

A threat is an agent that may want to or definitely can result in harm to the target organization. Threats include organized crime, spyware, malware, adware companies, and disgruntled internal employees who start attacking their employer.

Vulnerability – Weaknesses or gaps in a security program that can be exploited by threats to gain unauthorized access to an asset.

Risk is where threat and vulnerability overlap. That is, we get a risk when our systems have a vulnerability that a given threat can attack.

#45 Re: Off Topic » Why Cybersecurity Awareness Training Is Needed? » 2021-02-08 15:53:52

Employees are the last line of defense against a robust cybersecurity program. Training and awareness cannot be taken lightly; just one click of a malware infected link by an unaware, uniformed, untrained employee could have a devastating impact to any organization.

Businesses cannot fully protect themselves today from cyberattacks.  All the more reason why awareness training being part of any cyber resilience program is so essential. We need to be vigilant ensuring employee are participating in regular, mandatory training and awareness programs in order for our infrastructure resilience to work as intended.

Cybercrime should be regarded as one of the greatest threats facing an organization's security worldwide. Is your organization effective in ensuring awareness training is a fundamental, essential piece to your resilience program?

#47 Off Topic » Is advanced systemcare safe? » 2021-02-08 14:48:39

Apparently, Advanced System Care is bad for your computer, as are most "PC-Boosting" programs out there. It seems that most programs on AVC are useless as windows has a free, better version that comes installed or the programs are dangerous, like registry cleaner. The people on this site seem to be knowledgable, but I'm trying not to get into the habit of believing the first thing I read, so I'd like the opinions and experiences from more people who are more knowledgable about this stuff than I am. That and the info on the forum is 4 years old, so I don't know how current it is.

- Do you think AVC worth it or is it a scam?

- Is it true that registry cleaners aren't necessary and that they can hurt your computer in the long run?

- Would it be better to just use the programs that come installed on Windows 10 or another free program instead of paying IObit money for AVC?

I was concerned about whether I was leaving my entire computer open to malware by running only one program "As an Administrator". I think that you've answered that, and I will continue to use safe surfing practices.

#49 Re: Off Topic » Can A Vpn Be Traced And Show What You Downloaded? » 2021-02-08 13:51:44

A VPN is used for encrypting the traffic from your machine to the exit point of the VPN network. Therefore, a VPN isn't likely to protect you from being - Anonymous unless they happen to be on the same local LAN as you. People can use other methods for tracing you and your VPN can leak your real IP at times.
And if you're afraid of being caught downloading illegal materials, then use a proxy because even if you're downloading a torrent that can get tracked, and if you have proxy it will show it’s IP and not yours, also proxy doesn't keep any logs of their service. This means that they won't trace that IP address back to you.

#50 Re: Off Topic » Is Private cloud more secured than Public cloud? » 2021-02-08 13:50:36

Hello There,

I agree that many big enterprises prefer to use Private Cloud to keep their data secure. But it doesn't mean that the data on public cloud is not secure at all. In many cases, Public cloud data could be access by cloud provider because they hold all the rights to shift your data according to technical issues or requirement. And that creates a space of data insecurity.

On the other hand, Private Cloud is your own property that nobody can have access. And can not make any change without your permission. Private Cloud is mostly used to store financial or personal details of customers.
