Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is in line to start for Real Madrid in the Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund on June 1 at Wembley, sources have told ESPN.

Courtois has been sidelined for much of the season after suffering two serious knee injuries. He returned against Cádiz in LaLiga on May 4, before he sat out Madrid's Champions League semifinal second leg against Bayern Munich.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti believes Courtois is the best goalkeeper in the world, despite the fact that he does not want to say it publicly. Even after the 5-0 win over Alavés, Ancelotti said in their last two remaining league matches each goalkeeper will get the chance to play.

There is however an appreciation for Andriy Lunin, who stepped up during Courtois' absence. Madrid are keen to extend the Ukraine goalkeeper's contract until 2029, with a deal close to being done.

Barcelona should think of improving immensely next season Because if they don't real Madrid would give them a gap they may never close in a hurry

Whatever his emotional attachment to Leverkusen, it makes sense from an educational point of view for his first experience of the Champions League to come with a side he has fashioned.

That, perhaps, is the advantage of having had such a stellar playing career: unlike Villas-Boas, or other coaches who were not players, Alonso is unlikely to slip from the foreground of the game’s collective consciousness any time soon.

Perhaps that always meant there was always a high risk of Villas-Boas being buffeted off course. The question about him was, initially, whether he could match Mourinho’s feat from eight years earlier of following up the Uefa Cup/Europa League with the Champions League.
Offline
He did not (although the team he had joined did, having sacked him).To have matched the achievement with Porto would, even a decade ago, have been miraculous; since Porto’s success in 2004, every Champions League winner has come from one of four countries. Such are the finances of modern football that for Alonso to win the Champions League with Leverkusen next season would seem almost equally extraordinary.

Well, It remains to be seen whether this stunning, trophy-winning end to an otherwise fraught campaign will be enough to save him. It was not enough for Louis van Gaal in 2016 and his team finished fifth, three places higher than Ten Hag's, in the Premier League table.

Certainly, it strengthens his position. Observing the jubilant celebrations of Manchester United after the final whistle, particularly sweet for thwarting their rivals' double ambitions, it's hard to imagine that this might mark his last match in charge.

At the end of it all, Manchester United are deserved FA Cup winners, securing a place in next season's Europa League and making it two trophies in two years under Ten Hag, this one following last season's Carabao Cup triumph over Newcastle.
