Chinese authorities forbid American chip giant Micron, citing issue

China has banned US chip maker Micron from selling its products to Chinese companies involved in major infrastructure projects, saying they pose a threat to national security.

The development comes nearly two months after the country's cybersecurity authorities launched an investigation in late March 2023 to assess potential threats to network security. The Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) said: "The purpose of Micron's product network security assessment is to prevent product network security problems from compromising the security of nationally important information infrastructure, a necessary measure to protect national security.

The CAC also said the investigation found "significant cybersecurity vulnerabilities" in Micron's products that could threaten the supply chain of critical national information infrastructure. As a result, carriers involved in critical information infrastructure projects should stop purchasing Micron products, he added.

Authorities did not disclose Micron's cybersecurity concerns but cited violations of local laws and regulations. In a statement to the Wall Street Journal, Micron said it was "evaluating the results and evaluating next steps." The US Commerce Department told the BBC there was "no basis" for the restrictions.

The incident comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions between China and the United States, and the US government has taken similar actions against Chinese equipment manufacturers over security concerns.
