Is file encryption important?

Is it important for regular people to encrypt the files on their devices? I've heard that it might even be necessary to encrypt files on cloud storage too. What do you think? And is there some particular program that is really suitable for this? I did some research and so far I thought about going with NordLocker - though it's fairly new, it seems simple enough to use and could suit my needs quite well. There's also VeraCrypt, but it's for the whole hdd and that seems overkill.

Re: Is file encryption important?

It's up to you to decide if you want to encrypt your data on your PC.

It depends on how many other people have access to it, and in how far you trust those people. Your wife, for example, might not like the idea that you hide something from her. But if you let criminal friends work on your PC, it's another story.

Then it depends on how susceptible your PC is to hacking, and how bad it would be if a hacker could read your data.

And it might be a good idea to encrypt certain files anyway. Keepass 2 (a password lock) encrypts the file, and that's a good idea.

Here on my work PC, the hard disk is encrypted by Windows Bitlocker, and it's configured to only allow writing to encrypted USB-sticks either. That last is maybe too much for a private PC. And bitlocker only protects against people that managed to get the disk out of the PC, what a thief easily can do.

For the cloud, it depends on how far you trust the cloud service company and it's protection and how sensitive your data are. It's a bad idea to store your collection of child porn in the cloud unencrypted.

Well you should not hide data from your loved ones like your WiFi but you should encrypt data because today major companies and a lot of persons are after your data like credit card number details , bank account , PayPal data etc you should consider encryption as there are many tools to use my favorite is bit locker and veracrypt

if your PC is stolen. If some steals you PC then removes the drive they won't be able to read it. Now if they have your password then encryption won't help.

Re: Is file encryption important?

if there is valuable information, it should definitely be encrypted and placed in a separate storage.

I am all for the encryption of everything that could potentially be encrypted! Especially on cloud storage: no one should trust someone else's encryption system.
I hear about information leaks very often on the news, and it's always better for that information to be in an encrypted form. As lolapolooza said, Bitlocker can be used for disk encryption. When it comes to individual files that are shared over the Internet and/or contain some sensitive information, 7zip encryption is mostly enough IMHO, although some more sophisticated tools can also be used.
