Are you and your roommate sharing a router? If so, I'd also check the router model to ensure it isn't one that has hackable firmware. There are quite a few of them out there infected with malware.

Since you obviously can't control your roommates' computer habits, if your router supports multiple (or guest) networks it might even be a good idea to set up a separate network for each of you with separate wireless security keys.

Hi all,

After I recent bereavement in the family, I'm slowly working my way through the deceaseds financials and notifying banks, pension companies etc.. trying to put everything in order for his partner.

This got me thinking that I could make this whole process a lot less stressful for my family if anything happened to me by having the details of my life insurance, pensions, saving accounts, share trading accounts banking account and email account stored in some way that they would be safe but also easy to access should the worst happen.

The problem is I'm not sure what would be the best way to go about this. Ideally, I'd like some kind of USB stick that you need a password to access. Then I could store all the info in a text document inside. The security does not have to be unbreakable as the device would be stored in my home safe. So the security only has to be strong enough to keep the data safe until I know I have been robbed and can update my passwords in a timely manner.

Anyone else do this? I would love to hear some suggestions.

Thanks

Over the last 12 months or so, Norton offered the "opportunity" to move over to their 360 product at no cost. I was even able to renew my old subscription directly from Norton about 2 months ago without having to move over to the new product.

However, I received an email from them today saying I will be automatically moved to the new product within a few days. Some will say "But there's no charge, why are whining?". The answer to that being the Norton 360 products take up more system resources, and from the various reviews (e.g. AV Test and AV Comparatives) I've seen over the last 12 months, it is in many ways an inferior product compared to what I now use. However, the new version gives Norton the chance to make more money by nagging me to pay extra for things like VPN, Cloud Backup, and their Life Lock monitoring services.

I just use the free version of Bitwarden. I like that it's open source.

#30 Re: Off Topic » Why would some people's A/V flag my domains as malicious? » 2021-02-19 15:07:20

If you go to the " View Page Info / Security" of those 3 sites, 'iceteks' is the only one that shows "verified by: Let's Encrypt".
'redsquirrel.me' has no cert at all & 'uovalor' says "this connection is not secure" but that could be just mixed content.
UsandThem mentioned that his AV gets triggered in every thread you post in & you have the 'uovalor' site linked under your username so i assume that's the problem there.

Why some AV doesn't like that i'm not sure. I could understand the browsers throwing out a message with the ways things are going with them.

Really depends on the encryption software used to encrypt it.
If we are talking about Microsoft's bitlocker, you can delete and create a new parition via the disk part command and then recreate a new partition in Windows Disk management.

This is the typical approach for this specific issue; lost password.

#32 Re: Off Topic » How to find out one’s Viber account is hacked » 2021-02-19 15:04:04

Thanks for responding to my question.
Some time last year, both of our VIBER accounts (my girlfriend in the US and myself) were hacked into, by a mutual friend who’s curious to read what we wrote to each other
At first my friend VIBER message received an image of someone who she did not have any relationship, then my VIBER message received an image of her AVATAR, which we both did not pay any attention to.
Until one day my friend went berserk and called to tell me when she tapped the image she received before, suddenly it appeared a long line of chat messages we have been exchanging over a period of months, for as long as she cared to read, meaning whoever managed to infiltrate her account could read what ever been said between she and I.
There I realised those images carried with them the means to illicitly infiltrate our accounts and stayed there for as long as nobody noticed.
After checking through all our conversations and calls to make sure we did not leave any messages unread, nor calls unanswered, but the number 1 still remained on our VIBER app. We then deleted our VIBER app altogether, then reinstalled our VIBER app again, then that number 1 disappeared and stopped bothering us, with the understanding that whoever been eavesdropping on us had lost the means to spy on us.
Now that I have started a new friendship, this thing’s happening again, with that mutual friend still around. The number 1 appeared once again without the avatar appeared before to warn me of another attempt to hack my VIBER account.
I made some warnings after checking all the messages have been read, and all the calls have been answered (meaning there’s no reason for that number 1) then deleted the app altogether. This number 1 is gone now, and I’ll make sure I won’t let him in on a new relationship no more ! I think it comes from his boring lifestyle and nosey personality and hope he will stop bothering me, or my girlfriend...
Thanks for reading, and if you can share some thoughts on the events, it would greatly be appreciated.

The last two months my Viber logo on my IPhone been having a number 2 behind it. Even though after making sure there’s no missed message or call from any of my Viber contacts, this number 2 remained unchanged.
Is it a sign that my Viber account is hacked ? And how to get rid of this number staying next to my Viber logo.
Thanks for some explanation.

#36 Re: Off Topic » What's the difference between encoding, encryption, and hashing? » 2021-02-15 11:49:09

The Difference between hashing and encryption is that encrypted strings can be turned back into their original decrypted form if you have the right key.

What is hashing in network security:

Hashing means safe and secure data, such as passwords or importance files. It's is the transformation of a string characters into a normally shorter fixed-length value or key that represents the original string. Hashing is used to index and recover items in a database because it is faster to find original value.

#37 Re: Off Topic » Is file encryption important? » 2021-02-15 11:46:12

if your PC is stolen. If some steals you PC then removes the drive they won't be able to read it. Now if they have your password then encryption won't help.

#38 Re: Off Topic » Is the Tutu app safe for iOS? » 2021-02-15 07:49:42

The common issue now is the phone started to hang and work slow. Also, phones were getting dialled automatically in many cases. Apart from these no other safety issues have been found with this app. Tutuapp is safe but apps on tutuapp may not be safe.

#41 Re: Off Topic » How to stop someone from accessing my computer remotely? » 2021-02-08 16:00:39

You didn't say if this was Home, Pro or Enterprise.  RDP does not work on Home, but of course other third party programs do as suggested above by others.  If using one of the latter two OS's, look at this tutorial to setup RDP, but do the opposite and Un-check the box for remote access if it is indeed checked.  Unless other admins are using RDP, then I suggest you leave things alone.

#42 Re: Off Topic » Difference between php and html » 2021-02-08 15:59:33

Just to add what was already said:

There are two types of scripting languages : client side scripting and server side scripting languages. Javascript, VBscript, etc are client side scripting languages. If you write code in these, the code is downloaded on client's computer and executed there. PHP, ASP etc are server side scripting languages, they execute on the server and only the output is downloaded on the client's computer.

This way a user visiting a website made in PHP or ASP cannot view the code but only the output generated by the scripting code.

Some people may use your PHP code by inspecting its behaviour.
For example, if you have a code that generates a N digit password, a person can use it using this link : http://www.blah.com/generate.php?digits=5 and display the output in his/her own website.
It all depends on studying the behaviour of your code.
To protect PHP code so no body else can use it, you can contact your web site host to block such attempts.

#44 Re: Off Topic » Why Cybersecurity Awareness Training Is Needed? » 2021-02-08 14:54:11

The importance of providing cybersecurity awareness and training to your employees is that it helps to increase the chances of identifying a hack or attack before it is fully enacted, and it also minimizes the damage to your organization and reduces the cost of recovery.

If you don’t need to be logged in on Twitter and Instagram, you can use Nitter(Twitter) and Bibliogram(Instagram), which are two frontend services which allows you to browse the whole content on these 2 websites without their tracking, there’s only a few things you won’t be able to use like Instagram stories (and possibly twitter’s too).

#46 Re: Off Topic » Can A Vpn Be Traced And Show What You Downloaded? » 2021-02-08 13:52:52

What sometimes happens is that due to random updates or network issues your computer might temporarily disconnect from a VPN server while downloading. During that period your internet traffic is not "covered" and the downloadable content can then be traced to your IP address.

Killswitch would be the problem solver here. It basically kills your internet connection once your computer loses the connection to a VPN server, leaving no space for accidental data leak. Once you re-connect to a VPN server, then you can safely access the internet again.

If you want to use a VPN with a Killswitch feature you can download Atlas VPN, It has a free version with no data limits so you can torrent files without the need to upgrade. You can use this coupon code to try out the premium subscription for 10 days as well: JUTTLZHZ. You can only claim the coupon via android though.

#47 Re: Off Topic » Is Private cloud more secured than Public cloud? » 2021-02-08 13:49:27

It is found that in the public cloud, generally the security elements are provided by third-party cloud service providers whereas in the private cloud the security elements are configured in-house or they can be outsourced to a managed security service provider and they offer more control over security elements.
The public cloud is not very complex and at the same time does not depend upon old technologies but at the center it offers a more secure platform.

#50 Re: Off Topic » Is MediaFire safe? » 2021-02-08 13:44:08

Thanks for the reply... I checked up on this developer's Facebook page, where I found an excerpt that reads something along these lines... "This demo does NOT have trojans or malware in it, and Mediafire is a reputable site. As long as you download the file properly, there should be no issues... if there is malware somewhere, it's not from us."

That doesn't sound too reassuring to me.
