Yes I agree. I would keep those documents in several places. Encrypt the archive with 7-zip.

If you want to go with USB drives, I would put 3 of them in 3 different places.

Honestly, I don't know, but the way that browsers are getting, in terms of trying to be "Ultra Secure", some of them are no longer trusting "LetsEncrypt" domains, nor HTTP-only links.

HI Andvarix and welcome to the TS Forum

I will say that if i was you I would go for the science side, Networking is OK but here in the UK there are plenty of out of work Networkers.

Science is a good option, you may be the guy who finally fulfills asimov's dream, who knows

At the end of the day the choice is yours and you shouldnt be influenced by what others think,

Hi all,

My isp blocks port 25 to improve the quality of service, something i overlooked when i signed up. I am now locked into a 12month contract but could really do with this service.

Is it possible to run an ftp server on another port, I remember reading somewhere that this can be done but cant find any useful information/guides at the moment.

Anyone done this?

Thanks.

#33 Off Topic » Endless Automatic Repair Loop » 2021-02-15 15:10:56

This started yesterday when my computer began freezing out of nowhere after being on just a few minutes. About five hours later, my Windows 10 32-bit computer has been caught up in an endless automatic repair loop. It automatically boots to an X drive and I cannot get it to boot back to C. So here's what I've tried (in no particular order):

Method 1: Use Check Disk Utility

Connect the Windows installation media or Recovery Drive/System Repair Disc to your PC, select your language preferences, and finally click Next button to continue.

Click Repair your computer at the bottom.
Choose Troubleshoot>Advanced Options>Command Prompt.
Type chkdsk /f /r C: and then press Enter
Type exit and press Enter.
Restart your PC to see if the problem is fixed or not.
Method 2: Fix Boot and Rebuild BCD via Command Prompt

Open Command Prompt according to the steps in Method 1.
Type exe /rebuildbcd and press Enter.
Type exe /fixmbr and press Enter.
Typeexe /fixboot and press Enter.
Type exit and press Enter after completing each command successfully.
Restart your PC. If you are still stuck in Windows Automatic Repair loop, try the next method.
Method 5: Disable Automatic Startup Repair

In Command Prompt, type bcdedit /set {default} recoveryenabled No and press Enter.
Restart your PC, the Automatic Startup Repair should be disabled and you might be able to access Windows 10 again.
If you need to again enable it, you can type bcdedit /set {default} recoveryenabled Yes in CMD and press Enter.
Method 6: Check Device Partition and OsdevicePartition

Sometimes, if your device partition values aren’t correct, you will stuck in Windows Automatic Repair loop. Now, follow these steps to remove the Windows 10 Automatic Repair couldn’t repair your PC error.

In Command Prompt, type bcdedit and press enter.
Find device partition and osdevice partition values and make sure their values are correct or set to correct partition. Because Windows come preinstalled on Cpartition only, the default and correct value is C:.Enter the following commands and press Enter after each one if the value isn’t set to C:
bcdedit /set {default} device partition=c:

bcdedit /set {default} osdevice partition=c:

After that, reboot PC and fix Automatic Repair couldn’t repair your PC error.
Also tried this:

Was the windows 10 iso made from the Microsoft website?
If not please find a flash drive that you can format (8GB or larger)
Make a bootable windows 10 iso: Download Windows 10

Was system restore attempted?
Did it fail?
If it was not attempted that should be the first step (start with the oldest restore point and move forward in time trying each restore point.)
If system restore failed or if there were no restore points move to the next step.
Was startup repair performed?
If not, then attempt startup repair.
If both system restore and startup repair fail move to command prompt.

The command prompt commands will attempt to :
1) repair OS
2) repair drive file system
2) repair boot
3) repair registry

If these steps fail the next step will be boot recovery.

Using a bootable windows 10 iso open command prompt > Administrator: X:\windows\system32\cmd.exe > Sources X:>
1) type: bcdedit | find "osdevice"
(look for the drive letter for the partition)
2) type: C:
type: dir
3) type: D:
type: dir
(look for the drive that has windows and users)
4) type: X:
type: Sfc /Scannow /OFFBOOTDIR=G:\ /OFFWINDIR=G:\Windows
(change the letter G to the drive letter for the partition displayed in step #1)
This may take some time to run.
5) type C:
6) type: Chkdsk /f
7) type X:
9) type: bootrec /scanos
10) type: bootrec /fixmbr
11) type: bootrec /fixboot
12) type: bootrec /RebuildBcd
13) Use a camera or smart phone camera to take pictures of the commands and results and post an image into the thread
14) reboot
15) report into the thread whether you were able to boot to wall paper/splash screen or whether there was an error message and error code or a failure to boot without error message and code.

If the above fails plan registry backup repair (these are windows advanced troubleshooting menu commands)

If the registry repair fails find another flash drive that you can format and make a boot rescue drive:
Windows 10 Recovery Tools - Bootable Rescue Disk - Windows 10 Forums

I tried a few other things too, including Startup Repair and System Restore and Reset My PC (it goes right back to the preparing automatic repair/diagnosing pc/startup repair fail loop). I get something about a strtrail.txt in Logfiles and the attached file is what I get. So... no help, probably. So do I have to do a clean install/lose seven years of work on the only working desktop computer I have? I just want this endless loop to e

#36 Re: Off Topic » Hotspot shield VPN slow » 2021-02-15 14:52:18

I'm aware vpns are slower but many note increased speeds but generally a 20-30% drop seems standard not 80%. So if I pick say Japan as my location I can still be seen as being in the US..how does this help if I'm trying to get specific location content. Thought access was based on the IP location. Yes I am learning but concerned about the massive drop in speed which doesn't seem normal

#37 Re: Off Topic » What's the difference between encoding, encryption, and hashing? » 2021-02-15 08:30:13

All these techniques are used for converting the format of data. Encoding transforms data into another format using a scheme that is publicly available so that it can easily be reversed. It does not require a key. Encryption transforms data into another format and it is used for keeping the data secret. In Hashing technique, data is converted to a message digest or hash, which is usually a number generated from a string of text. Hashing is not reversible.

#38 Re: Off Topic » Is file encryption important? » 2021-02-15 08:24:27

It's up to you to decide if you want to encrypt your data on your PC.

It depends on how many other people have access to it, and in how far you trust those people. Your wife, for example, might not like the idea that you hide something from her. But if you let criminal friends work on your PC, it's another story.

Then it depends on how susceptible your PC is to hacking, and how bad it would be if a hacker could read your data.

And it might be a good idea to encrypt certain files anyway. Keepass 2 (a password lock) encrypts the file, and that's a good idea.

Here on my work PC, the hard disk is encrypted by Windows Bitlocker, and it's configured to only allow writing to encrypted USB-sticks either. That last is maybe too much for a private PC. And bitlocker only protects against people that managed to get the disk out of the PC, what a thief easily can do.

For the cloud, it depends on how far you trust the cloud service company and it's protection and how sensitive your data are. It's a bad idea to store your collection of child porn in the cloud unencrypted.

Somehow, as tutu application is a third part application. When you install any application from it, the specific application requires your personal data, which means that you need to take a look at their terms and conditions. Otherwise the application is safe.

#41 Re: Off Topic » Is advanced systemcare safe? » 2021-02-08 16:38:48

Advanced SystemCare does a good job of speeding up slow PCs, but it has a number of drawbacks that prevent it from being the best in the ratings.

Benefits:

- Improves computer performance.
- A useful Performance Monitor widget.
- Health Monitor - Provides summary information about the system.
- Has several security features.
- Data recovery.
- Cost.
- Disadvantages:

- Installation restrictions.
- Additional Features - Requires separate downloads and purchases.

I can't say anything bad about the security of this program. just did not come across information about it. but in my opinion it is quite safe.

#42 Re: Off Topic » Difference between php and html » 2021-02-08 16:15:03

PHP files are just like HTML files, but they can include both HTML and PHP code. The PHP code is parsed (or executed) by the Web server when the page is accessed and the resulting output is written as HTML within the Web page. When a user accesses a PHP page, his Web browser only gets sent the HTML code, since the Web server has processed the PHP code in the background. Most PHP pages are processed so quickly that it does not noticeably slow down the loading of the Web page.

The .php extension is important, since it tells the Web server that the page may include PHP code. Therefore, it must be run through the server's PHP engine before being sent to a client's Web browser. This allows dynamic content to be generated each time the Web page is loaded, based on the variables included in the PHP code. For example, PHP pages may load objects such as the current date and time, data from form fields submitted by a user, or information from a database. Still, once the page reaches the user's Web browser, everything is formatted as HTML.

F-Secure does not list the AntiBot Scanner on it's product download page but the address (http://download.sp.f-secure.com/charter … canner.exe) indicates it is actually CharterOnlineScanner. It is not uncommon for some security vendors to use technology created by other vendors and call it something else.

#44 Re: Off Topic » How can i improve security and privacy? O.S, Cloud Storage, Apps, etc. » 2021-02-08 15:55:18

Thanks everyone here
I need to do professional illustration work on Photoshop, Clip Studio Paint, use Final Cut Pro x, File Management, Browsing the internet, and I currently have bought a NUC8i5BEK (i5-8259u), to do this 3build thing, where I could use Linux, Mac and Win, in the most secure way. It would be just amazing if I have to install only Linux, and then use Mac and Win as VM’s, if they work as native. (or even better)
Anyway thoose below are my main concerns right now

Would I be able to run VM, MacOS and Windows, from Linux Host, at the same speed they would run with H4ck1nt0sh and Native? It would be cool to switch, back and forth, from Linux and Macos at the same time.

I need a cloud service that could share my files with unknown people, because I do need to send them thoose files as a rewards for their Patreon Pledge, so I normally use Dropbox as a service, and I do normally zip my reward file of the month, and then I apply a password to It, and sync it in Dropbox, dragging it into a synced folder on my Mac. Is this a correct way of doing this, or there is a better one? Yes you may ask if they would pirate my files after they download from my dropbox, uploading them to other websites for free. They could, but what could I do? Could I stop them to doing so?

Regarding the mobile device I need, The iPad and the iPhone, I could ditch the iPhone, but right now, I use Icloud Keychain as my main password manager, and I found it good, because it sync accroos all my iCloud Devices (Mac, iPad, iPhone). iF I could find any alternative that could sync between my Desktop (Linux, Mac, Win), iPad, Smartphone (android or ios), that would be amazing! Maybe better if it has a feature that could change every saved password, for each different account, every 30 or 60 days from the latest change. Would that be possible?
For the smartphone, I am sensitive to PWM and I would not use any OLED device, so if there is any iPS smarpthone option, better than the actual iPhone 8 I do have right now, that would allow me to use the password manager, and have a better privacy than ios, I would buy it. Any advice on this particular one?

I have done the first step in password management. What about the second step? How do I manage emails for each individual account I have for social media, digital services, apps, and others? How could I just remember one email address, to rule them all? (like the password manager does), and also How do I receive my emails, from different aliases, to only one Inbox, without the need to check every different inbox, every time?

There would be also a correct and privacy focused way to manage all social media account, schedule post on them, use them all togheter, automatize some stuff, without the fear to have the account been stolen? How would you manage social media accounts?

Thanks again

#45 Re: Off Topic » How to stop someone from accessing my computer remotely? » 2021-02-08 15:25:07

Is there a specific reason your IT folks cannot either reimage the computer, if you have IT folks and they do this routinely, and most mid-sized to large organizations do, or Doing a Completely Clean Install of Windows 10, then reloading the software you use?

Either method will be the easiest and most assured road to success to blocking whoever happens to have access at the moment.

There are a wide number of variables that could take quite a while to even attempt to dig through, and even then the result you seek will not be guaranteed.  A reimage/clean reinstall virtually guarantees it.

Hello,

My assumption is that malware cannot know what type of applications I am running (on desktop or mobile) and therefore only OS-vulnerabilities are targeted.

Does anyone know what the risks are of using outdated applications on desktop and mobile? Is it safe to use for example an outdated version of an app, while keeping the OS up to date? If not, what kind of risks (or attack vectors) do these introduce? Thank you!

I would honestly not use a gaming machine for sensitive work. The two don't go together. You need to isolate your sensitive files on a separate laptop/tablet to achieve maximum security. Gaming software is not known for secure coding conventions, there are many cases of RCE's in them.

Hi everyone! I am an Illustrator and  I got really interested on improving my privacy. Not only to better understand whats happening with my data, but also to see if I could help other people, after I’ve successfully helped myself first, and learned the how to.

I use several devices and digital services to consume and create content:

- 1 Desktop PC (Windows + MacOS Hackintosh) --> Apps (Final Cut Pro, Adobe Photoshop, Clip Studio Paint, Safari, Qbtorrent, Handbrake, VLC, Microsoft Office Apps . --> Digital Services (DropBox, Gmail, Drive)
- 1 Smartphone (Iphone 8) --> Apps (FB, IG, Whatsapp, Telegram, Youtube, Safari, Banking App) --> Digital Services (DropBox, Gmail, Drive)
- 1 Tablet (iPad Pro 12.9 2020) --> Apps (Procreate, Clip Studio Paint, Safari, Youtube) --> Digital Services (DropBox, Gmail, Drive)

To use, the app I do use, I need sometimes MacOS, and sometimes Windows OS. Added to it, I do often use my phone to see other artists works and get inspiration (Mostly Instagram, Tumblr, Deviantart, Pixiv… I do only use them in Safari, I dont have the app installed on my device). Could you help me understand my privacy flaws, where I could improve to the highest point of privacy, based on the app I do use for my work? I mean… I could go 100% Privacy, and not use any of thoose OS’s, but then How do I get my work done?

Thanks!
